Understanding the Versatility of Parker Seal Technology

For a variety of applications, there is a need for sealing devices that meet unique requirements. Parker offers a wide selection of specialty elastomers that satisfy these needs.

For example, Parofluor ULTRA(tm) is a high-performance elastomer that has exceptional temperature and chemical resistance. This material is ideal for semiconductor fabrication, chemical processing and other extremely harsh operating environments.

E5 Profile

The E5 Profile is a non-symmetrical rod seal designed to seal both lubricated and non-lubricated air. To ensure critical surfaces retain lubrication, the radius edge of the lip is designed to hydroplane over pre-lubricated surfaces. Parker's E5 Profile is available in a wide range of compounds and can be used for many applications.

The standard compound for the E5 Profile is Parker's Nitroxile ELF N4274A85 compound. This compound is formulated with proprietary internal lubricants to provide "Extreme Low Friction" and excellent wear resistance. It offers extended cycle life over standard nitrile and carboxylated nitrile compounds.

This rod seal is a two-piece design with a standard size o-ring energizing a wear resistant PTFE cap. This cap provides long wear and low friction without stick-slip. Special grooves in the PTFE inner diameter create a labyrinth effect to help reduce leakage. This seal is commonly used in swivel joints, hose reels, and machine applications.

The BS and UR profiles are hydraulic rod seals that utilize knife trimmed beveled sealing lips for enhanced wiping action on the rod. These seals also feature a secondary stabilizing lip that provides improved sealing performance in glands. In addition, the BS and UR profiles offer a wide variety of sizes to match up with many hydraulic applications. These seals can be used as a stand-alone or in tandem with another sealing system for higher performance.

OD Profile

Parker Seal Technology offers a wide variety of sealing solutions for fluid and gas handling, hydraulics, pneumatics, and process control applications. They are manufactured to withstand tight tolerances, higher temperatures, and aggressive chemistries.

They are made from elastomer, polymer, and metal materials in resourceful and innovative combinations to meet different requirements. Most are molded or composite products that incorporate the best characteristics of several materials to optimize performance.

The OD Profile is a non-symmetrical rod seal that can be used in tandem with a primary or buffer seal to form a sealing system for higher performance. The design allows trapped fluid pressure to be returned into the cylinder while the rod extends from the cylinder, providing enhanced leakage protection.

This seal can be used as a single-acting, double-acting, or multi-acting seal in hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders and actuators. It is available in a range of compounds and profiles to meet diverse applications: high and low temperatures, a wide variety of media, harsh operating conditions, various friction requirements, etc.

Unlike many other seals, the LC Profile has a unique 'back beveled' lip that supports the sealing lip from both sides resulting in less compressive force being directed to a narrower sealing line (See Figure 1). This geometry concentrates the compressed force and reduces leakage when the seal is installed or in service. This is especially beneficial for rods in control cylinders, servo-assisted equipment, machine tools and quick-acting cylinders.

Another advantage of this seal is that it has been formulated to be used with a PTFE wear resistant cap which provides long wear without stick-slip and creates a labyrinth effect for reduced leakage. The PTFE outer diameter also has special interference grooves designed into the cap to provide lubrication, eliminating spinning between the o-ring and seal and extending cycle life.

This seal is also available with a T-seal that is designed to retrofit standard industrial reciprocating o-ring glands. When energized, the T-seal forms a tight seal in the gland and is supported by anti-extrusion back-up rings that bridge the extrusion gap. The T-seal is an excellent choice for dynamic fluid sealing applications, eliminating the o-ring twisting and spiraling failure that can occur when the o-ring is not properly supported in a gland.

TR Profile

The TR Profile is a multi-function seal that offers the best of both worlds. It combines a standard size o-ring with a wear resistant PTFE cap to offer long wear and low friction without stick-slip. This PTFE outer diameter is designed with special interference to eliminate spinning between the o-ring and seal, and provides an excellent labyrinth effect to reduce leakage.

This gizmo also has a few other features including a tassy, non-stick sealing mechanism to reduce contaminant transfer and a high-tech look that's a pleasure to view. Its flange based design also makes it the smartest of the bunch when it comes to forming the tightest possible seal inside an industrial o-ring gland for maximum stability in dynamic fluid sealing applications.

In short, it's a great way to save money and time, and add years of service to the life of a component. It's the perfect complement to Parker's range of premium tube fittings, and a great example of the kind of innovation that has been engrained into the DNA of our business.
