Microsoft gives the Xbox a feature that no one expected

Microsoft has once again given the Xbox a new feature update - at least if you are part of the Xbox Insider Program. The patch allows you to map keyboard keys to your controller. How useful the feature is in practice is in the eye of the beholder.

Controller instead of keyboard: Xbox rolls out new console feature

Xbox insiders of the Alpha ring can be happy about a new feature. As Microsoft explains in an official blog entry, a new console update is currently being rolled out, which expands the console's range of functions.

Those who install the new software version can then map keyboard inputs to their controller. However, there is one restriction: The feature only works if you own the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 or the Xbox Adaptive Controller. If that's the case, you can use the Xbox Accessories app to make it work.

Currently, you can only assign a single keyboard key to each button on either controller - but you can use any number and combination of modifiers (Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Windows key, for example). So, if you've always wanted the Y key on your Elite controller to be a shortcut for the keyboard input Ctrl+Shift+V, you can now make that happen.

Here's how to set up the new shortcuts in the Xbox Accessories app

To map the keystrokes on your controller, follow these steps:

  • Open the Xbox Accessories app.
  • Also press the menu item "Configure".
  • Now create a new profile or edit an existing one.
  • Select the controller button that you want to equip with a keyboard shortcut.
  • Select Primary or Shift.
  • Now switch to the new keyboard tab to select the key combination of your choice.

How practical it is in the end that you can now use keyboard inputs on your Xbox directly via the controller is in the eye of the beholder. However, it is a fact that nobody probably expected this Xbox feature.
