The very first diesel locomotive to reach India was created by ALCO as part of its DL500 World Series. It had a 12-cylinder, 4-stroke motor with a 1900 hp power output. Due to the driver's cab being on one side only, the machines had a problem with their need for frequent reversing. There were just 100 of these models made. They could reach speeds of 100 kph and had a Co-Co wheel configuration.

It was based in Vizag, Gorakhpur, Patratu, Rourkela, and Gonda.

Although the majority of these engines have been dismantled, several of them were in use until the year 2000. This diesel locomotive model is still in use in various regions of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Greece, etc.

One of the designs is included in the National Rail Museum's collection in New Delhi.

This second 12-cylinder, the 4-stroke turbo-diesel locomotive was designed for both freight and passenger service on broad gauge lines. These were created by both BLW and ALCO. The locomotive engine's initial designation was ALCO DL560C, and it produced 2600 horsepower.

The locomotive had a cogwheel configuration. With over 2600 quantities manufactured between 1962 and 1998, these locomotive motors are the most prevalent ones in operation in India.

The temperature and environmental circumstances in India led to the selection of these engines specifically. They could be used practically anywhere and had adequate power. Because the construction method was simple, the locomotive could be produced in large quantities.

Indian Railways contacted Henschel and Sohn after ALCO. These engines, which were first known as DHG 2500 BB, were used in Mercedes diesel vehicles and combined hydraulic and diesel power. Despite being in use for almost 25 years, little is certainly known about these motors. They operated at 120 kph on a B-B wheel layout.
